Armenia’s Consul General in Aleppo Armen Sargsyan visits Latakia

On May 13, 2018, Consul General of the Republic of Armenia in Aleppo Armen Sargsyan, who is on a working visit to Latakia, met with Head of the Office for Agriculture of Latakia Munzir Kheirbek.

During the meeting, the sides discussed the paths for expansion of cooperation with Latakia in the agriculture sector and the opportunities for mutually beneficial use of the existing potential of agriculture in Latakia.

During the meeting, Mr. Kheirbek presented the agricultural potential of Latakia, stating that there are several friendly countries that have established effective and long-term partnerships in terms of exporting agricultural products from Latakia. In particular, Kheirbek recommended launching efforts aimed at exporting fruits and vegetables to Armenia and stressed that the rather low and competitive prices and the fact that the fruits and vegetables are eco-friendly, as well as the advantages of transfer by sea can make Syrian agricultural products attractive for the Armenian market.

The sides also touched upon the achievement of possible agreements in the sphere of chemical fertilizers. According to Kheirbek, Latakia is in dire need of agricultural pesticides, which can prepare ground for synthesis of the future steps and actions that will be taken with Armenia in this sphere.

During the meeting, importance was also attached to joint production of olives, the export of Syrian olive oil to Armenia, as well as the establishment and expansion of relations in the joint production of vegetable oils and soaps.

At the end, the sides discussed the perspectives of organizing joint exhibitions of agricultural products and reached an agreement on launching efforts aimed at organizing an exhibition of Syrian agricultural products in Armenia.

On the same day, Consul General of the Republic of Armenia in Aleppo Armen Sargsyan had a meeting with Head of the Office for Tourism in Latakia Ramez Berabhan. The interlocutors touched upon the implementation of the agreements reached in this sector, stressing the great importance of holding an exhibition advertising the opportunities and potential of tourism for Armenia in Latakia and, in this context, the holding of a forum devoted to Armenian-Syrian investments in the tourism sector as an exclusive opportunity for both countries to make further progress in the spheres of tourism and tourism investments.

During the working visit, the Consul General also met with representatives of the Armenian communities of Latakia and Kessab and participated in receptions during which the Consul General granted 113 passports of the Republic of Armenian and accepted 75 applications for Armenian citizenship.
